Otto Klar was born in Vienna in 1908. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Arts. He exhibited in Vienna, Munich and Berlin before coming to South Africa in 1939. Settling in Pretoria, he started painting and teaching.
Klar was known as a painter of landscapes, portraits, figure, and religious themes and still life. He is known particularly for his flowers and between 1958 and the mid 1960’s he painted a number of abstracts. He was interested in local landscape and Bantu figure subjects.
Otto Klar participated in a number of group exhibitions throughout Europe and South Africa. He also held several solo exhibitions in South Africa

In 1962, Otto Klar was awarded honorary professorship from the President of Austria on the recommendation of the Vienna Academy of Arts
He passed away in Pretoria in 1994 after making his mark in the South African art world.
