Richard emigrated from the then Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in 1979 and is now a resident of Clarens in the Eastern Free State. Born on a farm in the Natal Midlands, his interest in art goes back to boyhood. After finishing his schooling in Salisbury he attended the Durban School of Art for three years, after which he embarked upon a career in commercial art.
After 10 years in advertising he decided to open an art shop and gallery back in Salisbury where his interest and dedication to serious painting was consolidated.
Although initially starting off in oil he soon changed to water colours. This medium suited his impulsive nature and he derives satisfaction from the spontaneous commitment of ideas to paper which the medium of water colour so successfully accommodates. He has presented showings of his works in many one-man and combined exhibitions all over the country.
His paintings are to be found in homes as far a field as Canada, Australia, the U.S.A. and England. His originals have also been chosen by South African Airways and grace many of their transit lounges all over the world. Furthermore his prints are found in many businesses and hotels as well as in many private homes in South Africa.
Richard also paints in oils and acrylics, media in which he recently started doing magnificent abstract paintings, mostly landscapes. The vibrant colours and loose feel in paint application make these a very successful line which appeals to each and everyone and give the artist great satisfaction.
